Farewell to Dumbledore: Potterheads Raise Wands for Michael Gambon

In response to Michael Gambon’s passing, fans of Harry Potter shared GIFs of themselves waving their wands and remembered comments from Albus Dumbledore.

Michael Gambon, who portrayed Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, in the last six Harry Potter movies, passed away on Thursday at the age of 82.

Many fans of J.K. Rowling’s Dumbledore used social media to express their sorrow, especially by “raising their wands” and posting some of the character’s most iconic lines.

A declaration from Warner Bros.

The production company Warner Bros. owns the official Instagram account for the Harry Potter movies, which featured a monochrome image of Gambon entering Hogwarts as Dumbledore. We are deeply grieved by the news of Sir Michael Gambon’s passing,” it read under the photo. His grace, humor, and generosity brought millions of Harry Potter fans worldwide immense joy. He will always be remembered.”

A message titled “Sad to report that Michael Gambon, who played Albus Dumbledore in the last six Harry Potter films, has sadly passed away at the age of 82” was also released by the Harry Potter Universe fan page on X (previously Twitter). During this trying time, kindly raise your wands in support of Michael and his entire family and friends. I hope he finds peace.

Many fans of Harry Potter replied by lifting their wands in response, using text, emoticons, or GIFs from the fifth installment of the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which depicts Dumbledore’s burial. In the movie, the late Alan Rickman played the devoted Severus Snape, who uses the Avada Kedavra curse to kill Dumbledore’s character. This results in the iconic and depressing scene of Dumbledore falling from Hogwarts’ Astronomy Tower.

Additional honors for Michael

Many Dumbledore quotes were shared by Potterheads to express their condolences for Michael’s passing. For example, Albus Dumbledore once said, “If one remembers to turn on the light, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times.” This was written by one of them on X. “RIP.”

A different person brought up the fact that “Hagrid and Dumbledore left together.” Another actor who passed away last year was Robbie Coltrane, who portrayed Rubius Hagrid in the Harry Potter films. “Hagrid and Dumbledore left together, they will be unforgettable,” the user remarked. Others who commented included Michael Gambon (1940–2023) and Robbie Coltrane (1950–2022).

Michael was addressed by one of them using Dumbledore’s full name. “TO THE BEST HEADMASTER EVER!!” was what they posted. DUMBLEDORE SIR, PROFESSOR ALBUS PERCIVAL WULFRIC BRIAN.”

It was pointed out to us by another Potterhead that both of the Dumbledores had left. In the first two Harry Potter movies, Richard Harris played the headmaster of Hogwarts before Michael. Harris passed away in 2002.
