Stokes has not yet been ruled out of what would be a rematch of the 2019 final, having reversed his unexpected one-day retirement to rejoin the team.
Harry Brook, 24, appears to be living up to his World Cup hopes; he will probably start the tournament by starting in place of Ben Stokes, who is recovering from a slight hip injury, in Thursday’s opening match against New Zealand in Ahmedabad.
England gave up opener Jason Roy to make room for Brook, who has been dubbed a future superstar of the game due to his explosive batting.
Although Stokes has not been ruled out of what would be a rematch of the 2019 final, captain Jos Buttler explained why England’s number four batter was not fully fit. Stokes reversed his shocking one-day retirement to rejoin the team.
“He is experiencing a minor hip ache. “Hopefully, it will be good news for us,” Buttler said to reporters on Wednesday at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
“We’ll find out more when the guys show up for training (later) today. He’s working hard with the physios.”
Test captain Stokes, who has been dealing with a problematic knee for a while, is back in the one-day setup just as a batter, and he showed what he could do last month when he broke the record by making 182 against New Zealand.
Naturally, England is hesitant to hurry him thus early in the six-week competition.
We’ll make the right call here, and if he’s not ready to play, he won’t play, as Buttler put it.
“At the beginning of the tournament is not the time to take a significant risk on someone.”
Brook, a dependable selection for England’s test team and a member of their squad that won the T20 World Cup the previous year, is probably going to benefit from the current situation.
Harry is a great player, as we know. In both the test and T20 cricket formats, he has had an incredible start to his international career, Buttler stated.
“Although he hasn’t played a lot of ODI cricket, it seems like the right format for him.
He would be able to bat for an extended period of time and score significant runs, which is something he enjoys doing.
“Every shot belongs to him. Test cricket has shown us that he is capable of big innings. Therefore, this structure ought to work pretty well for him.
